Heavy Mortar And Pestle Sets
With an almost unlimited number of mortar and pestle sets available it is difficult to know what to choose. We all have different cooking techniques and use them in different ways. For some of us we use them to grind up all manner of things and make all manner of dressings and sauces. For others it is simply for grinding the occasional dried herbs.
Whatever you use a mortar and pestle set for then there is no doubt that the heavier the set is the better. It really is advised that you do not buy anything that is too flimsy or that is too light. Using a cheap pestle and mortar is nothing but annoying if cheap means light and poor quality. Much better to get a heavy stone or marble mortar and pestle set to make life that little bit easier.
The difference really is very large when it comes to ease of use and the effectiveness of the grinding action that is used as well as the pounding of the pestle in to the mortar.
A light set simply will not function very well and leaves the cook frustrated and not able to efficiently mix up the ingredients. Get a really heavy set and the cooking will be much more of a pleasure.
The same can also be said for size. It is much better to get as large a size as possible as this means that it can be used for small quantities as well as for large preparations. It is often not just grinding a few herbs that the pestle and mortar is used for. Often we also want to use it for making salad dressings and infusing garlic or other herbs and spices in oils and vinegars. The larger the set the easier these important culinary practices become. Use a very heavy mortar and pestle set and the cooks life is made as easy as possible. A small set will simply lead to frustration and more of the contents on the kitchen counter than in the mortar.
This is especially important if the chef using the pestle to pound the ingredients. A heavy pestle makes effective work of even the toughest of ingredients but a light one will do little if anything. This means it will be used less, if at all, and is a wasted purchase. When it comes to making the best use of the set then the heavier and bigger the better.
