Why Use A Marble Pestle And Mortar?

The fact is that lightweight materials are far from ideal for successful grinding, pounding and mixing in a mortar. If the pestle does not have a substantial weight and be very durable the cook will face nothing but problems.

The pestle especially needs to be heavy enough that it makes a good impression on the spices tat are often the mainstay of the chef’s use of the equipment. Pounding the contents in the mortar is quite often performed and the pestle needs to be of a strong material that will both make an impact and have a large enough surface area to perform the desired task successfully.

This is why marble is such a good choice of materials. It has a substantial weight behind it and does a very good job of grinding materials up very well. When initially purchased the marble pestle and mortar may be perfectly smooth. We find that within a very short space of time the inside of the mortar and the end of the pestle itself will become slightly rough. This is very desirable. It gives a much bigger surface area and it also helps to grind up the contents much easier and in a faster space of time.

The fact that the whole set will be relatively weighty means that there won’t be slips and slides around the kitchen surface when the use of the set is quite vigorous. This is why we really do not recommend anything that is not at least of a fairly substantial weight and why marble is such a good choice for a mortar and pestle set.
