Wood Vs. Marble Mortar And Pestle
A short while ago we looked at the advantages of a marble mortar and pestle set here at the mortar and pestle sets store. As many people are unsure as to what material is the best to use I felt it may be of use to take a look at the differences between materials to see what is the best pestle and mortar set when choosing between wood and marble.
Each has their own advantages but there is one material that I have found to be much better and does a far superior job when it comes to grinding and pounding ingredients.
Wood Mortar And Pestle Sets
Wood does have a number of advantages as a material so let’s take a look.
Foremost is the fact that we can buy some fantastic looking wood pestle and mortar sets. This is definitely the main advantage. The set can be left out on the kitchen counter because it looks so good. The varieties of hardwoods means that the grain and color really stands out and makes it a kitchen accessory that is perfect for staying in quick reach.
In reality though wood mortars and especially the pestle may simply be a little light for the serious cook. For occasional use they are fine and as a gift they may be perfect, but for a serious cook who may need to use one every day they are not ideal.
Why?
There is simply not enough weight to make the grinding of spices and foods an easy job. We need weight, especially for the pestle to make the job easy. This is much easier to achieve if we have a much heavier material to begin with. This is not to say that wooden sets should not be bought, just that if the wooden mortar and pestle is for a serious cook then something heavier and easier to use may be more appropriate.
Marble Mortar And Pestle Sets
As opposed to wooden pestles and mortars, marble sets are much heavier and therefore make the cooks job that little bit easier. The extra weight because of the material chosen simply makes using them a much quicker and easier job. For pounding ingredients the weight of the marble pestle makes the job simple and much more effective.
As with wood mortar and pestles the material means that it is perfect to leave the set out at all times so that using it is easier and it actually adds to the look and feel of the kitchen. Any chef or busy cook likes to have the most used kitchen tools at hand and leaving the marble set out at all times will mean it will be used as and when it is needed and the fabulous colors of many sets will add a nice touch to the kitchen counter.
For those that would use a mortar and pestle set regularly then marble is certainly the choice over wooden sets because of the extra weight that we have.
